When Hunger Could Not Wait: How Karuna Seva Trust Began Its Journey

February 2020 changed life for millions of people across the country. For daily-wage workers and migrant labourers, the impact was sudden and severe. Work stopped without warning. Income disappeared overnight. Many people were left with no savings, no access to food, and no way to send money back to their families.

Hunger did not arrive slowly. It arrived all at once.

Karuna Seva Trust was founded during this period of uncertainty. The purpose was not planned in advance. It emerged from a simple but urgent reality. People needed food, and they needed it immediately.

Many labourers had come to the city in search of work. When lockdowns were announced, they were stranded. With no employment and no support system, even basic daily meals became difficult to manage. Families back home depended on them, but there was nothing left to send.

The Trust responded by focusing entirely on food support. Cooked meals and food packets were prepared and distributed directly to those in need. There were no complicated procedures or conditions. Hunger does not wait for approvals.

Within the first year, more than 20,000 food packets were distributed. This effort did not stop once restrictions eased. Food insecurity continued to exist for many families, patients, and children who were still struggling to recover financially.

Karuna Seva Trust continued its work because the need continued.

Today, food distribution remains one of the Trust’s core activities. Meals reach families facing hardship, patients undergoing treatment, and individuals who still find it difficult to afford proper nutrition.

The journey of Karuna Seva Trust began with food, but at its heart, it has always been about dignity. No one should be forced to choose between hunger and survival.
